What to check before buying a GT86

6 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $12,000–$26,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.

Negotiate, then budget for it

Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.

  • Confirm the limited-slip differential is working It should be standard. Tight circle on full lock and feel for both wheels driving. If it is not working you have an unexpected Phase 1 cost. -
  • Fuel pump recall completion on early cars Check the VIN against outstanding recalls. The failure mode is a stall. $0–$800
  • Oil level, oil condition and service history The FA20 is sensitive to oil level. A documented history matters here. $1,500–$7,000
  • Clutch condition Clutch kicking is hard on these and the cars are old enough now for a tired clutch to be common. $700–$2,000
  • Accident and track history These are popular track cars. Check paint depth, panel gaps, and look for roll bar bolt holes and harness mounts. $1,500–$6,000

Worth knowing

Changes what you are buying rather than whether you should.

  • Rear subframe and diff mounting condition Particularly on a car that has clearly been driven hard. $400–$2,000

The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.

Why this chassis goes wrong where it does

Price verified

The most expensive entry on this list relative to what it gives you in power. You are paying for reliability, parts availability and a short Phase 0 - which is a real thing to pay for, but be clear that is what you are buying.

The mid-range torque dip community

The FA20's torque curve has a well-known dip in the middle of the rev range, and you feel it when you need power to hold an angle. It is the main reason so many of these end up supercharged or turbocharged.

Early-car fuel pump recall history community

Some early cars were covered by fuel pump recalls. Check whether the work was done on any car you are considering, because the symptom is a stall.

Rear differential mounting at power community

Once the car makes more than factory power through a locked or clutch diff, the rear mounting points and the driveshaft become the things to watch. Standard Phase 3 territory.

Oil consumption and oil level sensitivity community

The FA20 is sensitive to oil level and some cars consume oil. Check the level and the history, and watch it during Phase 0 rather than assuming it is fine.

Steering side, imports and paperwork

Sold new worldwide in both configurations with no import process, and recent enough to buy with a full service history. The three badges are mechanically the same car for build purposes, and most parts are listed for all of them - but check, because some body and interior parts differ between Toyota and Subaru versions and between model years.

This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.
