What to check before buying a S15
5 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $15,000–$45,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.
Walk away
If you find any of these, the car is not cheap, whatever the price is. Structural problems at a suspension or subframe mounting point get worse on a locked-diff car.
- Verify the import paperwork independently Build date against the 25-year rule, clean VIN, and a documented import history. This is the single highest-risk item on this chassis. $0–$45,000
- Rear strut towers and rails Less likely than an S13 but still worth the ten minutes. $800–$4,000
- Evidence of Japanese accident repair Mismatched seam sealer, non-factory welds, overspray in the engine bay and boot. $1,500–$6,000
Negotiate, then budget for it
Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.
- Confirm Spec-R or Spec-S, and what gearbox is behind the engine A Spec-S advertised loosely as a Silvia is common. The six-speed is a Spec-R item and worth real money. -
- Boost history and engine condition Compression and leak-down if you can, and ask what boost it has run. A tired tuned SR is a very expensive Phase 0. $2,000–$8,000
The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.
Why this chassis goes wrong where it does
Price is the weak point verified
At current values an S15 is worth multiples of an S13, which changes the whole calculus of learning in it. Nothing about the car makes you a better driver than a cheaper S-chassis would; it just makes mistakes cost more. Factor the risk of damage into the budget honestly.
Import paperwork and misrepresented cars community
Because demand is high, this chassis attracts cars with questionable import documentation, VIN issues and undisclosed accident history from Japan. Verify paperwork independently rather than trusting the listing.
SR20DET oil pump drive and coolant passages community
Same engine family, same reputation as the S13 and S14. The Phase 0 cooling baseline and oil gauges are not optional on a tuned SR.
Rust is less common but not absent community
Newer than an S13 and often better looked after, but Japanese-market cars can carry rust from coastal and snow-region use. Check the rear strut towers and rails exactly as you would on an older S-chassis.
RHD-only parts logistics verified
With no LHD version, steering, pedal box and dash parts all come from Japan or from specialists. Lead times and freight are part of the budget here in a way they are not on a 240SX.
Steering side, imports and paperwork
Right-hand drive only - the S15 was never sold new in the US or most of Europe. In the US it becomes importable under the 25-year rule as each model year ages in, which means early cars have only recently become legal and later ones are still waiting. Check the exact build date against the rule before you buy, and be careful with cars offered as already-imported: verify the paperwork rather than the seller's description. Every steering-side caveat from the S13 and S14 applies, with no LHD option to fall back on.
This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.

$15,000–$45,000 was the asking range when we checked on 2026-10-06. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on the structural condition - and a cheap car with a problem from the blockers list below is not cheap.
