What to check before buying a G35
3 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $4,000–$12,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.
Negotiate, then budget for it
Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.
- Manual or automatic, and whether it has the factory limited-slip differential Both matter a lot. Tight circle on full lock for the diff. $2,000–$5,000
- Oil level, oil condition and service history VQ35 oil consumption is a known talking point on early engines. $1,500–$6,000
- Rear subframe and diff mounting condition A heavy car with a locked diff loads the mounts. Check for cracking on tracked cars. $500–$2,500
The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.
Why this chassis goes wrong where it does
Weight and length verified
Heavier and longer than a 350Z. Brakes, tires, cooling and spring rates all specified for it, and the consumables bill rises accordingly.
VQ35 heat sensitivity community
The same family trait as the 350Z. Treat the Phase 2 cooling upgrade as required, and fit an oil cooler.
Thinner drift aftermarket than the 350Z community
Much of the Z parts bin carries over mechanically but suspension and angle parts often do not. Confirm G35-specific fitment rather than assuming.
Steering side, imports and paperwork
Sold new in the US in left-hand drive with no import process, and there are a lot of them. Shares a great deal with the 350Z, which helps parts availability considerably - but the chassis is longer and heavier and some suspension parts do not interchange.
This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.

Questions
What is the one thing to check on a G35?
Manual or automatic, and whether it has the factory limited-slip differential. Both matter a lot. Tight circle on full lock for the diff. Putting it right costs $2,000–$5,000 if you find it.

Oil level, oil condition and service history, at $1,500–$6,000. VQ35 oil consumption is a known talking point on early engines.
How much should I pay for a G35?
$4,000–$12,000 was the asking range when we checked on 2026-10-06. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on the structural condition - and a cheap car with a problem from the blockers list below is not cheap.
