The honest read on a G35
A G35 is the cheapest way to get a 280 horsepower rear-wheel-drive car with a limited-slip differential option and a 350Z parts bin behind it. They are plentiful, they are cheap because they were ordinary luxury saloons, and the sedan in particular is genuinely good value. The costs are weight - it is heavier and longer than a 350Z - and the same VQ heat sensitivity, plus a drift-specific aftermarket that is thinner than the Z's because many parts are Z-specific.
Why it drifts
A VQ35's torque, a competent multi-link chassis and, on many cars, a factory limited-slip differential. It is stable and progressive. The weight is the honest cost and the main thing you specify everything else around.
Steering side, imports and region
Sold new in the US in left-hand drive with no import process, and there are a lot of them. Shares a great deal with the 350Z, which helps parts availability considerably - but the chassis is longer and heavier and some suspension parts do not interchange.
A G35 plan, in the right order
Seat-time goal, every phase priced. $4,000–$12,000 for the car is not included.

What goes wrong on a G35
3 known weak points, each tagged with how much we actually know and which phase it belongs in.
Weight and length verified phase 2
Heavier and longer than a 350Z. Brakes, tires, cooling and spring rates all specified for it, and the consumables bill rises accordingly.
VQ35 heat sensitivity community phase 2
The same family trait as the 350Z. Treat the Phase 2 cooling upgrade as required, and fit an oil cooler.
Thinner drift aftermarket than the 350Z community phase 2
Much of the Z parts bin carries over mechanically but suspension and angle parts often do not. Confirm G35-specific fitment rather than assuming.

Engines
| Code | What it is | Stock | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| VQ35DE | 3.5 naturally aspirated V6 | 280 hp | The same engine family as the 350Z, in a larger, more practical body. Quoted outputs vary by year and body style. |
Swap options
| Swap | What it buys you | Rough cost | Difficulty | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supercharger or turbo on the VQ | Forced induction on the factory engine. | $4,000–$9,000 | 3/5 | Cooling first - the VQ is heat-sensitive. |
| LS-series V8 | Done and documented on this chassis. | $7,000–$15,000 | 4/5 |
Power comes last in the plan for a reason. The grassroots and Pro-Am field mostly runs 200 to 350 hp and is not held back by it - see why phase 3 is phase 3.
Angle kits and wheel fitment
Thinner than the 350Z's. Some Z33 parts fit and many do not, so confirm G35-specific fitment before ordering - this is a common and expensive mistake on this chassis. Roll centre correction should be treated as required given the weight.
Offset window: front 15mm to 45mm in 8.5-9.5in widths; rear 10mm to 40mm in 9-10.5in. An angle kit moves the usable front window out by about 10mm.
5x114.3. These windows are a starting point only - measure at full lock with the suspension loaded.
Questions
How much does a G35 drift build cost?
A seat-time build on a G35 comes to $2,255–$5,710 in parts, on top of $4,000–$12,000 for the car itself. Add $1,590–$4,320 a season for tires, fluids and entry fees, which is the figure most parts lists leave out. The full breakdown by phase is on the build cost page.
Is the G35 a good first drift car?
We rate it 3 out of 5 for difficulty as a first build and 4 out of 5 for parts availability. A G35 is the cheapest way to get a 280 horsepower rear-wheel-drive car with a limited-slip differential option and a 350Z parts bin behind it. They are plentiful, they are cheap because they were ordinary luxury saloons, and the sedan in particular is genuinely good value.
What should I check before buying a G35?
Manual or automatic, and whether it has the factory limited-slip differential is the first thing. Both matter a lot. Tight circle on full lock for the diff. There are 3 checks in the full buying guide, each with what it costs to put right if you find it.
What wheel offset works on a G35?
Front offsets of roughly 15mm to 45mm commonly clear on a standard-bodied car, in 8.5 to 9.5 inch widths. Fitting an angle kit moves that window out by around 10mm. These are starting points, not guarantees - measure at full lock with the suspension loaded.
