What to check before buying a 370Z
6 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $12,000–$28,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.
Negotiate, then budget for it
Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.
- Service history and oil condition The VQ family rewards maintenance. A documented history is worth paying for on this car. $1,000–$5,000
- Cooling system condition and any overheating history Core, hoses, and whether the car has had any heat-related work. $400–$3,000
- Clutch and gearbox Slip under load and crunching synchros. A clutch is a Phase 3 cost you did not plan for. $800–$2,500
- Rear subframe and diff mounting points Cracking, particularly on a tracked car. $500–$2,500
- Accident and paint history Normal used-car diligence - paint depth, panel gaps, and a history check. $1,500–$6,000
Worth knowing
Changes what you are buying rather than whether you should.
- Whether it is a sport model with the factory limited-slip differential A working factory LSD is a real head start. Tight circle on full lock to confirm it still works. -
The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.
Why this chassis goes wrong where it does
VQ37 heat sensitivity community
The same family trait as the 350Z and arguably more pressing with more power. Oil temperature rather than water temperature is the limiting factor under sustained drift load. Treat the Phase 2 cooling upgrade as a Phase 0 or Phase 1 item on this chassis, and fit an oil cooler.
Weight verified
3,250 to 3,450 lb. The highest consumable cost per event of anything on this list except the JZX100, and spring rates and brakes have to be specified for it.
Purchase price is the main barrier verified
Several times what an E36 costs and more than most S13s. It is a better car, but a first-season driver learns the same lessons in something cheaper and bins the panels at a lower cost.
Rear subframe and diff mounting at power community
A heavy car with a locked or clutch diff loads the mounting points. Inspect for cracking on any car that has been tracked.
Clutch and synchro wear on hard-used cars community
Clutch kicking is hard on a factory clutch, and these cars are old enough now that a tired clutch is common. Feel for it on the test drive.
Steering side, imports and paperwork
Sold new worldwide and recent enough that there is no import process and plenty of local supply. The newest chassis on this list by some margin, which means better condition and higher prices but also fewer thirty-year-old surprises in Phase 0.
This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.

What is the one thing to check on a 370Z?
Whether it is a sport model with the factory limited-slip differential. A working factory LSD is a real head start. Tight circle on full lock to confirm it still works.

How much should I pay for a 370Z?
$12,000–$28,000 was the asking range when we checked on 2026-10-06. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on the structural condition - and a cheap car with a problem from the blockers list below is not cheap.
