What to check before buying a S2000

3 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $18,000–$40,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.

Negotiate, then budget for it

Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.

  • AP1 or AP2, and confirm the engine on the block The AP2's F22C has more usable torque, which matters a lot for this purpose. -
  • Soft top condition and water ingress Lift the carpets. A leaking roof means rotten floors and corroded connectors, and a replacement roof is expensive. $800–$3,500
  • Service history and evidence of over-revving A high-revving engine that has been abused is an expensive Phase 0. Compression and leak-down if you can. $3,000–$9,000

The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.

Why this chassis goes wrong where it does

No low-end torque verified

Holding an angle means keeping the engine above 5,000 rpm, constantly. This is the defining difficulty of drifting an S2000 and the main reason owners end up supercharging them.

Snap oversteer reputation on factory geometry community

The early AP1 in particular has a well-known reputation for sudden rear breakaway on factory alignment. Proper drift geometry and the Phase 2 alignment matter more here than on a more forgiving chassis.

Collector pricing verified

The most expensive car on this list to buy and to repair. Panels, roofs and interior parts all cost collector money now.

Steering side, imports and paperwork

Sold new worldwide in both configurations, so no import process. Prices have risen sharply as the car has become collectible, which affects the calculus the same way it does for the AE86.

This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Bought one? Start here

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.
