What to check before buying a Mustang S197
3 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $6,000–$20,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.
Negotiate, then budget for it
Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.
- V8 or V6, and which V8 Output varies a lot across this generation. A later 5.0 Coyote car is a very different proposition from an early 4.6. -
- Rear axle, mounts and control arm bushings Check for play and for previous repair, especially on a car that has been drag raced. $400–$2,000
Worth knowing
Changes what you are buying rather than whether you should.
- Whether it has a limited-slip differential, and the axle ratio GT cars generally did. The axle ratio matters more on a torquey car than people expect. -
The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.
Why this chassis goes wrong where it does
Solid rear axle changes the setup entirely community
Spring rates, damping and alignment knowledge from independent-rear cars does not transfer. The axle is strong and simple but it skips over bumps in a way an independent rear does not, and the chassis needs a different approach. Look for Mustang-specific setup knowledge, not generic drift setup.
Weight verified
3,400 to 3,700 lb. The brake, tire and cooling requirements are among the highest on the list.
Front suspension geometry and lock community
Angle kit support exists but the selection is narrower than for the Japanese chassis, and the front geometry is not as easy to get big lock out of. Expect to spend on geometry rather than chasing extreme angle.
Steering side, imports and paperwork
Left-hand drive, sold new in the US in enormous numbers, with the deepest and cheapest parts supply of anything on this list. The solid rear axle is the defining technical difference from everything else here.
This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.
