What to check before buying a S14
6 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $5,000–$22,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.
Walk away
If you find any of these, the car is not cheap, whatever the price is. Structural problems at a suspension or subframe mounting point get worse on a locked-diff car.
- Rear strut towers, under the boot carpet The first place structural rust appears. Push hard. $800–$4,000
- Frame rails and diff mount area from underneath Cracking or scaling at a mounting point is structural. Walk away. $1,000–$5,000
Negotiate, then budget for it
Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.
- Confirm zenki or kouki and check the front structure Also the fastest way to spot a front-end repair, because the panels and brackets have to match. $300–$2,000
- Engine and loom match SR-swapped KA cars are everywhere. Look behind the dash for taped relays and crimped joins. $500–$3,000
- Steering at full lock, both directions Clunks, weeping rack, or witness marks if a kit is already fitted. $300–$1,200
- Cooling system condition Silted core, soft hoses, evidence of a previous head gasket job. $200–$2,500
The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.
Why this chassis goes wrong where it does
Rear strut towers and the floor verified
Same as the S13 and for the same reasons. Lift the boot carpet, check the towers, and push a screwdriver into anything that looks dark. Structural rust at a suspension mount is a walk-away.
SR20DET oil pump drive and coolant passages community
The same reputation as the S13's engine. Get the Phase 0 cooling baseline right and fit oil pressure and temperature gauges before you add any power.
Power steering rack and hard lines community
Thirty years old and about to be asked to work at full lock constantly. Do it in Phase 0.
Zenki and kouki parts are not interchangeable everywhere verified
Front bumpers, lights, and some of the structure behind them differ between early and late cars. This catches people buying cheap body panels and cooling parts that mount to the front end.
Diff mount and axles at power community
A locked diff plus real power finds the axles and the mount, as on every S-chassis. Reinforcement is normal; a spare axle in the trailer is normal too.
Steering side, imports and paperwork
Same split as the S13: US cars are LHD 240SX with KA engines, Japan-market cars are RHD Silvia with SR engines. The S14 also splits into early (zenki) and late (kouki) front-end styling, and some body panels, lights and bumper fittings do not interchange between them. Check which you have before ordering anything cosmetic or any part that mounts to the front bumper structure.
This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.

Questions
What is the one thing to check on a S14?
Rear strut towers, under the boot carpet. The first place structural rust appears. Push hard. Putting it right costs $800–$4,000 if you find it.
What is the most expensive thing that can be wrong?
Frame rails and diff mount area from underneath, at $1,000–$5,000. Cracking or scaling at a mounting point is structural. Walk away.
How much should I pay for a S14?
$5,000–$22,000 was the asking range when we checked on 2026-10-06. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on the structural condition - and a cheap car with a problem from the blockers list below is not cheap.
