What to check before buying a RX-7 FC

3 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $8,000–$28,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.

Walk away

If you find any of these, the car is not cheap, whatever the price is. Structural problems at a suspension or subframe mounting point get worse on a locked-diff car.

  • Rotary compression test with the correct gauge The single most important check. A standard piston compression tester will not give a useful answer. $4,000–$10,000
  • Cooling system condition and overheat history Any history of overheating on a rotary is a serious warning sign. $500–$3,000
  • Rust at arches, sills, floors and rear suspension mounts Panels are scarce. Structural rust is a walk-away. $2,000–$10,000

The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.

Why this chassis goes wrong where it does

Apex seals and rotary maintenance verified

The rotary needs meticulous cooling, oiling and tuning, and a tired engine with poor compression will not survive a drift day. Compression testing a rotary properly requires the right gauge - get it done before you buy.

Cooling is critical, not just important verified

A rotary generates a lot of heat for its size and is far less tolerant of overheating than a piston engine. The Phase 0 cooling baseline is the highest-stakes version of that item on this whole list.

Rust and parts scarcity community

Arches, sills, floors and the area around the rear suspension. Body panels are scarce and expensive, so a rotten shell is not economically repairable.

Steering side, imports and paperwork

Sold new in the US in left-hand drive and in Japan in right-hand drive. Body and interior parts are now scarce in both markets. Rotary-specific parts come from specialists rather than general retailers.

This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.

Questions

What is the one thing to check on a RX-7 FC?

Rotary compression test with the correct gauge. The single most important check. A standard piston compression tester will not give a useful answer. Putting it right costs $4,000–$10,000 if you find it.

What is the most expensive thing that can be wrong?

Rotary compression test with the correct gauge, at $4,000–$10,000. The single most important check. A standard piston compression tester will not give a useful answer.

How much should I pay for a RX-7 FC?

$8,000–$28,000 was the asking range when we checked on 2026-10-06. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on the structural condition - and a cheap car with a problem from the blockers list below is not cheap.
