What to check before buying a R34
3 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $20,000–$50,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.
Walk away
If you find any of these, the car is not cheap, whatever the price is. Structural problems at a suspension or subframe mounting point get worse on a locked-diff car.
- Confirm rear-wheel-drive GT-T physically, and verify import paperwork Chassis code, no front differential, build date against the 25-year rule, clean VIN. $0–$50,000
- Rust and evidence of Japanese accident repair Arches, sills, strut towers, rear subframe. Mismatched seam sealer and overspray. $1,500–$8,000
Negotiate, then budget for it
Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.
- Engine condition, boost history and tune Compression and leak-down if possible. Ask what boost and what tune. $3,000–$10,000
The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.
Why this chassis goes wrong where it does
Price is the main weak point verified
At current values this is one of the most expensive cars on the list, and nothing about it makes you a faster learner than an R33 would. Factor the cost of damage honestly.
RB cooling and oil control community
Same family reputation as the R32 and R33 - oil drainage and control issues when revved hard, cooling that is marginal at sustained load. Phase 0 cooling done properly plus oil gauges early.
Import paperwork and misrepresentation community
High demand attracts cars with questionable documentation and undisclosed Japanese accident history, and GT-T cars dressed as GT-Rs. Verify independently.
Steering side, imports and paperwork
Right-hand drive only, and the model years are only now reaching US 25-year eligibility - check the specific build date rather than assuming. The GT-R is all-wheel drive, costs many times more, and is not what you want for this. Verify the chassis code and look for a front differential. R34 pricing carries the heaviest Skyline tax of the three generations here.
This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.
Bought one? Start here
Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.
