What to check before buying a R33

6 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $11,000–$28,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.

Walk away

If you find any of these, the car is not cheap, whatever the price is. Structural problems at a suspension or subframe mounting point get worse on a locked-diff car.

  • Confirm rear-wheel-drive GTS25t, physically Chassis code and no front differential. Not a GT-R. $0–$28,000
  • Verify import paperwork independently Build date against the 25-year rule, VIN, documented history. $0–$28,000
  • Rust: arches, sills, strut towers, rear subframe Thorough check. Structural rust at a mount is a walk-away. $1,000–$6,000

Negotiate, then budget for it

Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.

  • Engine condition, boost history and tune Compression and leak-down if possible. Ask what boost and what tune. $2,500–$9,000
  • Cooling system condition Core condition, hoses, and any evidence of previous overheating. $400–$3,500

Worth knowing

Changes what you are buying rather than whether you should.

  • HICAS status Working, faulty, locked or deleted. $100–$600

The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.

Why this chassis goes wrong where it does

Weight and length verified

Bigger and heavier than an R32, which means more heat into brakes and tires, higher spring rates and a bigger cooling requirement. Stable rather than agile. Specify suspension for the real weight.

RB cooling and oil control community

Same family reputation as the R32: oil drainage and control issues when revved hard, cooling that is marginal at sustained load. Phase 0 cooling done properly plus oil pressure and temperature gauges early.

Rust at arches, sills, strut towers and rear subframe community

Japanese-market import stream, snow-region cars common. Structural rust at a suspension mount is a walk-away.

HICAS rear steering community

Usually locked out or deleted for drift. Cheap to do, but a faulty system makes the car feel strange until it is addressed.

Skyline tax on parts verified

Mechanical parts cost more than S-chassis equivalents; body and trim cost considerably more. Add margin to every phase.

Axles and diff mount at power community

A torquey six through a locked diff in a heavy car. Phase 3 drivetrain reinforcement is genuinely warranted and a spare axle belongs in the trailer.

Steering side, imports and paperwork

Right-hand drive only, and the model years are ageing into US 25-year eligibility progressively - check the specific build date rather than assuming the generation qualifies. The same GT-R warning applies: the R33 GT-R is all-wheel drive, far more expensive, and not what you want. Verify the chassis code and look for a front differential.

This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Bought one? Start here

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.

Questions

What is the one thing to check on a R33?

Confirm rear-wheel-drive GTS25t, physically. Chassis code and no front differential. Not a GT-R. Putting it right costs $0–$28,000 if you find it.

What is the most expensive thing that can be wrong?

Confirm rear-wheel-drive GTS25t, physically, at $0–$28,000. Chassis code and no front differential. Not a GT-R.

How much should I pay for a R33?

$11,000–$28,000 was the asking range when we checked on 2026-10-06. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on the structural condition - and a cheap car with a problem from the blockers list below is not cheap.
