What to check before buying a R32
6 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $12,000–$30,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.
Walk away
If you find any of these, the car is not cheap, whatever the price is. Structural problems at a suspension or subframe mounting point get worse on a locked-diff car.
- Confirm it is a rear-wheel-drive GTS-t, physically Check the chassis code and look underneath for a front differential. A GT-R is not what you want and is not worth the money for this purpose. $0–$30,000
- Verify import paperwork independently Build date, VIN, documented import history. $0–$30,000
- Rust: rear arches, sills, strut towers, rear subframe Thorough, with a screwdriver. Structural rust at a mount is a walk-away. $1,000–$6,000
Negotiate, then budget for it
Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.
- Engine condition and boost history Compression and leak-down if possible. RBs that have been run hard on a bad tune are expensive. $2,500–$9,000
- Cooling system and oil pressure Silted radiator, soft hoses, and any evidence of a previous overheat or oil-related rebuild. $400–$3,500
Worth knowing
Changes what you are buying rather than whether you should.
- HICAS status Working, faulty, locked out or deleted. Ask, then verify by how it drives. $100–$600
The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.
Why this chassis goes wrong where it does
RB20DET is short on torque community
Smooth, revvy and not torquey. Holding an angle means keeping the engine in its range, which is a skill but also a handicap while you are learning. Most R32 drift builds end up swapping to an RB25DET or a JZ for exactly this reason - budget for it as a likely Phase 3 item rather than a surprise.
Rust at the rear arches, sills and strut towers community
Japanese-market cars from snow regions are common in the import stream. The usual inspection applies, and structural rust around the rear subframe or strut towers is a walk-away.
RB cooling and oil control community
The RB family has a long-standing reputation for oil drainage and oil control problems when revved hard and for cooling systems that are marginal at sustained load. Do the Phase 0 cooling baseline thoroughly and fit oil pressure and temperature gauges early.
Skyline tax on parts verified
Mechanical parts cost more than the equivalent S-chassis items, body and interior parts cost considerably more, and the premium applies whether or not the part is rare. Add a margin to every phase.
HICAS rear steering community
Cars fitted with the factory rear-steer system are usually locked out or deleted for drift because the behaviour is unwanted. It is a cheap job but it is a job, and a car with a faulty HICAS system drives strangely until it is addressed.
Misrepresented GT-R parts and badges verified
At these values, GTS-t cars dressed as GT-Rs are common. Verify the chassis code and the drivetrain physically, not from the listing.
Steering side, imports and paperwork
Right-hand drive only. The whole R32 range is now past the US 25-year threshold, which is why they are visible there at all. Critically: the GT-R is all-wheel drive and is not a drift platform in standard form, costs several times what a GTS-t costs, and is the car most sellers are implying when they say Skyline. You want a rear-wheel-drive GTS-t. Check the chassis code and the drivetrain, not the badge.
This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.

Questions
What is the one thing to check on a R32?
Confirm it is a rear-wheel-drive GTS-t, physically. Check the chassis code and look underneath for a front differential. A GT-R is not what you want and is not worth the money for this purpose. Putting it right costs $0–$30,000 if you find it.
What is the most expensive thing that can be wrong?
Confirm it is a rear-wheel-drive GTS-t, physically, at $0–$30,000. Check the chassis code and look underneath for a front differential. A GT-R is not what you want and is not worth the money for this purpose.
How much should I pay for a R32?
$12,000–$30,000 was the asking range when we checked on 2026-10-06. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on the structural condition - and a cheap car with a problem from the blockers list below is not cheap.
