What to check before buying a MX-5 NB

3 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $3,500–$13,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.

Walk away

If you find any of these, the car is not cheap, whatever the price is. Structural problems at a suspension or subframe mounting point get worse on a locked-diff car.

  • Sills, rear arches and frame rails Push hard with a screwdriver. Structural rust is a walk-away. $600–$3,500

Negotiate, then budget for it

Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.

  • Carpets up, check for water ingress A leaking top means rotten floors and corroded connectors. $300–$2,000
  • Timing belt history and whether it has the factory LSD Interference engine with a belt. Tight circle on full lock for the diff. $300–$1,200

The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.

Why this chassis goes wrong where it does

Not enough torque to be easy verified

Around 142 hp. Holding an angle means momentum, accuracy and a lot of clutch work.

Light-duty differential and axles community

Sized for a 2,400 lb car making 142 hp. Welding plus added power finds the limits quickly.

Rust at sills, arches and rails, plus roof leaks community

Better than the NA but the same places. Lift the carpets and check for water damage.

Steering side, imports and paperwork

Sold worldwide in both configurations. Parts availability is excellent and cheap, and the NB shares a great deal with the NA, which widens the options further.

This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.
