What to check before buying a MX-5 NA

6 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $3,000–$14,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.

Walk away

If you find any of these, the car is not cheap, whatever the price is. Structural problems at a suspension or subframe mounting point get worse on a locked-diff car.

  • Sills, rear arches and frame rails The structural rust points. Push hard with a screwdriver. $600–$3,500

Negotiate, then budget for it

Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.

  • Lift the carpets and check for water A leaking top means rotten floors and corroded connectors. Very common. $300–$2,000
  • Timing belt history on the 1.8 An interference engine with a belt. No history means budget for it immediately. $300–$1,200
  • Differential mounting and the power plant frame Check for cracking and for previous repair, especially on a car that has been tracked. $200–$1,200

Worth knowing

Changes what you are buying rather than whether you should.

  • Which engine, 1.6 or 1.8 The 1.8 BP is the one to have. Confirm on the block. -
  • Whether it has the factory limited-slip differential Some did, usually with the 1.8 and the sport package. Tight circle on full lock to check. -

The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.

Why this chassis goes wrong where it does

Not enough torque to be easy verified

At around 116 to 131 hp from the factory, holding angle requires momentum and accuracy. Many people find this a feature while learning and a wall shortly afterwards. Be honest about which you are looking for.

Light-duty differential and axles community

The drivetrain was designed for a 2,200 lb car making 130 hp. Welding the diff and then adding power finds the limits of the axles, the diff itself and its mounting quickly. This is the main reason big-power MX-5 drift builds get expensive fast.

Rust at sills, arches and the frame rails community

Thirty-plus years old and often stored outside with a soft top. Check the sills and rear arches carefully, and look at the rails underneath.

Soft top and interior water damage community

A leaking roof means wet carpets, rotten floors and corroded electrical connectors. Lift the carpet.

Thin angle-kit catalogue community

The enormous MX-5 aftermarket is aimed at autocross and circuit, not drift. Angle kits exist but the selection is far narrower than for the S-chassis, so expect to spend Phase 2 money on geometry, alignment and front tires rather than maximum lock.

Steering side, imports and paperwork

Sold worldwide in both configurations, and there are more of them than almost anything else here. Parts availability is outstanding and cheap, with an enormous aftermarket that exists mostly for autocross and track rather than drift - which means plenty of suspension and brake options and a thinner angle-kit catalogue.

This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.

How much should I pay for a MX-5 NA?

$3,000–$14,000 was the asking range when we checked on 2026-10-06. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on the structural condition - and a cheap car with a problem from the blockers list below is not cheap.
