What to check before buying a JZX100
6 checks, in the order to do them, with what each problem costs to put right if you find it. Asking prices were $11,000–$30,000 when we checked on 2026-10-06.
Walk away
If you find any of these, the car is not cheap, whatever the price is. Structural problems at a suspension or subframe mounting point get worse on a locked-diff car.
- Verify import paperwork independently Build date against the 25-year rule, clean VIN, documented history. $0–$30,000
- Rust: rear arches, sills, strut towers, rear subframe Thorough check with a screwdriver. Structural rust at a mount is a walk-away. $1,000–$6,000
Negotiate, then budget for it
Not dealbreakers, but each one is money you will spend in phase 0 whether you planned to or not.
- Engine code on the block and transmission type 1JZ-GTE Tourer V manual is what people mean by a JZX100. A 1JZ-GE auto is a much cheaper car for a reason. $2,500–$7,000
- Cooling system and head gasket history Look for a silted core, recent gasket work, and ask why it was done. $300–$3,000
- Differential mount, axles and driveshaft Particularly if already drifted. Cracking at the diff mount is structural. $500–$2,500
- Boost history and engine condition Ask what boost it has run and on what tune. Compression and leak-down if you can. $2,000–$8,000
The right-hand column is what the fix costs, as a range. Solid rows are the ones that should stop you; dotted rows are negotiating points.
Why this chassis goes wrong where it does
Weight is the defining constraint verified
At around 3,300 to 3,550 lb this is one of the heaviest cars on the list. Brakes, tires, cooling and spring rates all have to be specified for the real weight, and consumables cost more per event than on an S-chassis. Do not use setup numbers from a lighter car.
Automatic to manual conversion verified
Many were automatics, and the conversion is a complete job - gearbox, pedal box, hydraulics, driveshaft, shifter and loom. It is well documented but it is not cheap. Price it before buying a cheap auto car.
Rust in Japanese-market places community
Rear arches, sills, strut towers and around the rear subframe. Snow-region and coastal cars are common in the import stream. Inspect as thoroughly as an S13.
Axles, driveshaft and diff mount at power community
Torque plus weight plus a locked diff is the hardest combination on this list for a drivetrain. The Phase 3 reinforcement item is necessary here, and a spare axle in the trailer is standard practice.
Cooling at sustained power verified
A heavy car with a turbo six at drift rpm generates more heat than an S-chassis, and the factory system is now twenty-five-plus years old. Water and oil both need attention by Phase 2, not Phase 3.
Body and interior parts scarcity community
Running gear is shared across Toyotas and easy. Bumpers, lights, glass, dash and trim are Japan-only. Any body damage is expensive and slow to fix.
Steering side, imports and paperwork
Right-hand drive only, Japan-market only. In the US the earlier JZX100 model years have come into 25-year-rule eligibility and later ones are still ageing in, so check the specific build date. Mechanical parts are shared widely across the Toyota range, which makes the running gear easy; body panels, lights, glass and interior trim are Japan-only and getting harder to find.
This matters more than it sounds. Industry reporting on parts returns names regional variants and mid-year production changes as a leading cause of wrong-fitment orders, and steering racks, knuckles, angle kits, master cylinders and pedal boxes are frequently not interchangeable between left and right hand drive.

Phase 0 is the chassis inspection you just did, plus fluids, cooling, brakes, bushings and steering wear. It is the cheapest phase and the one that protects everything after it.

Questions
What is the one thing to check on a JZX100?
Verify import paperwork independently. Build date against the 25-year rule, clean VIN, documented history. Putting it right costs $0–$30,000 if you find it.
What is the most expensive thing that can be wrong?

How much should I pay for a JZX100?
$11,000–$30,000 was the asking range when we checked on 2026-10-06. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on the structural condition - and a cheap car with a problem from the blockers list below is not cheap.
